Tip of the Week

Bananas are a healthy and tasty snack, but who knew they could double as a great shoe polish or facial mask? Here are five eco-alternatives that utilize a natural product instead of store-bought chemicals.

1. Shoe and silverware polish: Remove the stringy material from a banana peel and rub the inside of the peel on leather shoes or silverware.  Buffing the material with a soft cloth or paper towel produces an extra shiny finish. .
2. Facial Mask: Mashed-up banana applied to the face and neck for 10-20 minutes moisturizes and softens the skin. Rinse the mask off with cold water.
3. Tenderize meat: If you are cooking a roast or broiling a steak, throw a banana peel into the pan to ensure the meat doesn’t get tough. You can also wrap the meat entirely in banana peels for the duration of its cooking time.
4. Butterflies and birds: Punch holes in overripe bananas and hang them above head-level to invite butterflies and birds into your garden. Remember to take them down before dark, however, to avoid attracting nocturnal wildlife.
5. Aphids: Cut up and bury banana peels about an inch deep into the soil around your attacked plant and those aphids will move away. This is a great alternative to poison. Remember to always slice the peels, however, because whole peels will attract wildlife.
