editor's note

Dear Reader:

Fall is traditionally the time for changes. Leaves turn, pumpkins ripen, balmy days become snowy. Outward changes are readily apparent, but it’s the inward ones that concern me. Change is often difficult and old habits die hard, but change is also inevitable. The good news is it’s only through change that we grow as individuals. So welcome the season’s twists and turns, and put your best foot forward.

This issue is full of things to elicit changes in your life and home. If spiritual change is what you seek, visit Walter and Arthur’s Zen garden on page 41. It’s a nice reminder of how something as simple as a garden can evoke peace, serenity and reflection.

If you want to make changes to aid the environment, see the article on energy-efficient windows on page 16. Follow the advice and you’ll see nice changes in your energy bill, too.

If creative inspiration is what you need, see the remodel story on page 34. The featured homeowner didn’t even know she had an artistic side until later in life. Now, there’s no stopping her!

Fall means Halloween, and Halloween means ghosts. Boulder has its share of ghost tales, so get spooked on page 78 while contemplating the supernatural.

If you simply want to sit back, relax and get to know some neighbors, see the Home of Distinction on page 52; A Wildlife Wonderland on page 28; and Barnhopping on page 94.

As always, I extend a heartfelt thanks to all the residents who shared their beautiful homes and properties with us. Your creativity and passion are inspirational.

As we go to press, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina weighs heavily on our minds. As a magazine dedicated to home and garden issues, we are especially distressed about the thousands left homeless through this tragic episode in our history. So, if you can help, please do. See the ad on page 57 for ways that you can help rebuild the lives of so many affected individuals.

May all readers have a fall full of positive changes.

Sincerely,

Carol S. Brock
