theresa's tips for garden success

These tips from Theresa O'Neill will keep your garden on track.

Keep a gardening journal. O’Neill records everything she plants, makes special notes about each plant, and files all her receipts. “If you get a bad batch of something, don’t be afraid to go back to the source. Most places allow up to a year to return something.”

Use mail-order resources, “but only for hard-to-find varieties.” For more common varieties, “you’ll pay just as much through mail-order, so buy those locally.”

Don’t be afraid of roses that bloom only once a year. “Most people would rather plant roses that bloom more than once. But the blooms are so gorgeous, and the scent is heavenly.”

Beginning rose growers should try the mini rosebush varieties. “They’re the easiest to care for, and deadheading isn’t always necessary.”

Get your children involved. O’Neill’s son, Kyle, tends to “his” plants, and also pulls weeds. Daughter Shannon releases ladybugs, feeds birds and names the snakes in the compost pile. “It’s really great for kids to see that if you work hard, it pays off in the end.”

Share, share, share! “Swap cuttings with other gardeners, give big bouquets as gifts and always label everything in the garden for interested visitors.”
